There are a number of ways you can participate in research at the DGP. Which one is right for you depends on the stage of your career:
Graduate Research
Those seeking to conduct MSc or PhD research within DGP at the University of Toronto should apply to the Department of Computer Science. Students admitted to the program under the supervision of a DGP faculty member will be seated in the lab. Undergraduate students considering graduate research are best served by seeking out research opportunities while conducting their undergraduate studies. Most students admitted to graduate programs in the DGP lab have at least some degree of undergraduate research experience.
Both MSc and PhD students are fully funded, without the requirement to work as a research assistant. Our MSc is a research program, where students are expected to complete at least one publication-ready conference or journal paper. Like schools in the US, we offer a direct-entry PhD program with requirements that are just as rigorous as our traditional progressive MSc and PhD.
Undergraduate Research
Exceptionally strong undergraduate students have many opportunities to conduct research in the DGP. U of T undergraduates may conduct independent study courses; contact a DGP faculty member directly. Undergraduates from U of T or elsewhere may apply to the UTEA and NSERC USRA funding programs for paid summer research. Undergraduates from abroad may apply to DGP research opportunities through the Mitacs Globalink program.
In some cases, faculty may also have additional paid research opportunities. Students are encouraged to carefully review faculty research areas and approach individual faculty members about research opportunities.
Post-Doctoral Research
Post-doc fellows are hired directly by faculty members in the lab. If you have an outstanding publication record in the area of research of one of our faculty members, please consider contacting them to discuss post-doctoral research opportunities. Post-docs at U of T typically bring their own funding, and faculty will also assist in applying for new opportunities for outstanding candidates.
Visiting Professors and Researchers
The DGP has a long history of outstanding visiting researchers making the lab their home during sabbatical and at other times. Visiting research positions are always arranged through direct contact with a faculty member in the lab.
