GSU Game Rules Summary (intermediate division)
For official GSU rules
see above.
Bolded items changed as of Jan. 1996
- bounds
- court boundary is the red lines
- if ball touches wall, roof, rafters, lights etc., last team
contacting ball loses the point or service
- service
- You may serve from anywhere behind the back line, between the
extensions of the side lines.
- any ball contact with net on serve is loss of serve.
- service may not be blocked.
- a finger "set" or play is NOT allowed on the first hit
(automatic double hit).
This was originally allowed and
has now been disallowed. We should double-check with the opposing
team before playing to agree in case they're not aware of this
change
- net and foot violations (should call in intermediate)
- can't touch net
- can't land with either foot completely across center red line (under
the net).
While this is no longer illegal according to recent
international rule changes, it is sheer lunacy due to the
greatly increased risk of injury and shouldn't be tolerated in
GSU league games.
- ball handling (may call - captains must agree before match)
- palming - basically volleying the ball with your open hands
- scooping - basically using open hands when "bumping"
- directing - ?? changing direction of ball radically - likely includes
"poor" volleys, "carrying"/throwing and slam dunk type "spikes"
(which may fall under palming instead)
- presumably holding etc. will always be called)
- you may play the ball with any part of your body (including your
lower leg and foot).
- double hits
- can't touch the ball twice in a row (blocking doesn't count as a
contact)
- for volleys this means that both hands must contact simultaneously
- contrary to new intertational rules (and consistent with
older rules), volleying a serve or spike is considered an automatic
double hit.
Since such "double hits" were
legal in an earlier version of the GSU league rules, we should
double-check with the opposing team before playing to agree in
case they're not aware of this change
- contacts and blocking
- max of 3 contacts per side
- blocking is done above top of net, with blocker's feet
off the floor
- blocking does not count as one of the 3 contacts
- a blocker may be the first to contact the ball after the block
- back row attack
- A player positioned on the back row at the start of play may only
spike provided he/she leaves the ground behind the red 3 meter line (the
attack line) across the court.
- over net play
- reaching over top of the net only on the follow-through for a spike
or block
- can only touch ball on opponents side of net to block after
third hit (i.e. can't interfere with play).
