2) ITRC has a new President. He is John Chattoe. John comes to us from Northern Telecom Canada where he was Vice President New Business Development. John will sit on the Executive Committee of the Ontario Telepresence Project along with Peter Leach (TRIO), Ron Riesenbach, Bill Buxton and Morris Goldberg. 3) We have a visitor from Paris, Michel Beaudoin-Lafon, who will be with us in Toronto for three months during his sabbatical. Michel specializes in human-computer interaction and is a professor at the Universite de Paris-Sud. Michel's e-mail is mbl@dgp.utoronto.ca. Welcome Michel. 4) Bell Canada has named the second of 2 collaborators assigned to work with us on the Project; Ken Schuyler. Ken works out of the 800 Bay St. offices of Bell Canada. Over the course of the next few months, Ken will work with us to identify the area of particular research interest to him and his group. Ken's phone number is 353-4446. We are working to get an e-mail link to Ken who, like most Bell people, is on the ENVOY system. Welcome Ken. 5) Calendar of events: Saturday, October 17th was UofT day. Telepresence set up large monitors on either sides of the Sandford Fleming building so that students would be able to see and talk with other students remotely.

October 31 - November 4 is the CSCW'92 Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work at the Toronto Hilton International. Sharing Perspectives is the theme, with contributions from a variety of research areas in computer science and the social sciences. Saturday will feature workshops, Sunday will feature tutorials, and Monday through Wednesday will have the papers, plenaries and panels, interspersed with demonstrations and videos. The opening plenary will be delivered by Shumpei Kumon from the International University of Japan, "From wealth to wisdom: a change in the social paradigm." The closing plenary will feature Joseph McGrath of the University of Illinois at Champaign, "Groups interacting with technology: the complex & dynamic fit of group, task, technology & time."

Directly following CSCW'92 on November 5th and 6th will be the International Telepresence Project Scientific and Technical Committee meeting. The meetings will take place in the University of Toronto Hart House Debates Room. At 9 am. November 5th: The morning will be devoted to a plenary session, with lunch served in the Hart House Gallery Club. The afternoon will feature research summaries. Please get your proposals in to Marc Chignell (mark@vered.rose.utoronto.ca, 416-978-8951, fax 416-971-1373). November 6th: meetings with researchers and some demonstrations. To attend this meeting you *MUST* register with Beverly Harrison (beverly@dgp.utoronto.ca, 416-978-0778, fax 416-978-4765). Please do so ASAP.

November 9th & 10th, Telepresence will be giving the showcase demonstration at CAS/CON'92, the Centre for Advanced Studies Conference sponsored by IBM Canada at the Ontario Science Centre. The conference will include research speakers and approximately 50 demonstrations. We will be demonstrating the contrast between the office of the present with the office of the future, which will exhibit a new electronic desk designed by the Arnott Design Group, one of our Telepresence partners. Peter will be giving a lecture entitled, "The Office You Wish You Had." He is the director of an 80 person research group in the United Kingdom. Their work is very relevant to the Telepresence Project's research, and we urge all interested parties to attend. A detailed schedule will be available by November 2nd. And lastly, one of our Telepresence members, Prof. Marilyn Mantei, will be a featured speaker on the Ben Shneiderman broadcast, User Interface Strategies '93. The broadcast will be held December 9, Wednesday from 11 am to 5 pm EST. Prof. Mantei will be speaking on Computer Supported Cooperative Work.

6) Bill Buxton and Ron Riesenbach will be away Oct. 26-28 at TeleCon XII in San Jose, CA. In preparation for the CSCW'92 conference, Barbara will not be available for the week of Oct. 26-30, except for emergencies.
