August 14, 2008 (Grinnell, Iowa):
The National Weather Service predicted "cold funnels" that would drop 100
- 300 feet out of the clouds and then go back up. According to a native Iowan
colleague of mine, when the ground temperature is enough warmer than
the funnel, an updraft keeps the funnel from touching down. Happily, the
NWS was correct.
