Why (Computer Graphics) Ph.D.

Well, I will be doing a Ph.D. degree not for any fancy reasons – I don’t plan to save the worlds with some innovative technologies (and I don’t think I am capable of that). I want to do Ph.D. only because I found computer graphics appealing, I mean, visually and technologically appleaing. And to master this interdisciplinary field, I need to do a Ph.D. – a Master’s is not enough, at least to me. Therefore, I don’t really care about the Ph. part of the Ph.D. nor do I have great interests in other subfields of computer science.

How (Computer Graphics) Ph.D.

I am writing this one month before the official start of my Ph.D. degree and right after SIGGRAPH 2022. Basically, to graduate, you need some publication(s). My standard for myself would be at least 3 leading author SIGGRAPH/TOG publications. But a few weeks ago I talked with my advisor, and we agreed that a publication with little to no impact would be really boring – and IMO even on SIGGRAPH, there are some papers like that. So let’s see about that.

And in 2-3 years I hope to build a decent understanding of computational imaging.

When (Computer Graphics) Ph.D.

Let’s say 4 years. The guaranteed funding period is just 5 years anyway.
