research
- My research interests are in technologies to support individuals and families in the at-home care, coping and self-treatment of chronic health conditions like type 1 diabetes, autism and visual impairments. This is at the intersection of personal health, self-awareness, informatics, human-computer interaction, technology applications, design and the overall user experience.
- Previously I held two National Science Foundation (NSF) Undergraduate Research Fellowships at the Illinois Institute of Technology Engineering Center for Diabetes Research and Education with Dr. Ali Cinar and the University of California, Santa Cruz Assistive Technology Lab with Roberto Manduchi. I also have worked in research laboratories as varied as Beta Cell Biochemistry and Positive Psychology.
An Empirial Study of Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes Management (Present, University of Toronto)
Questionnaire- and interview-based qualitative study exploring the challenges of parents and caregivers in managing a young child's type 1 diabetes.
bant iPhone App for Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes (Present, Centre for Global eHealth Innovation)
Using a mobile application to support the transition of diabetes management from parent to adolescent through user collaboration and reflection. Featured in PSFK's 2010 Future of Health report for UNICEF in the "Picturing Our Health" section.
Spatial Learning for the Visually Impaired (Summer 2009-Present, University of Toronto)
Explored the practices, challenges and design opportunities for people with visual impairments as they learn about new environments through discussions with orientation and mobility specialists, and interviews with people with visual impairments as they explored two contrasting, unfamiliar environments. Timbremaps (Summer 2009, University of Toronto)
Designed and conducted user study with Jing Su for iPhone application to assist the visually impaired in making mental maps. Accepted to MobileHCI 2010. [pdf]
Task-Centered Battery Interface (Summer 2009, University of Toronto)
Developed and analyzed mobile device survey, and conducted deployment study in collaboration with Khai Truong, Tim Sohn from Nokia Research, Julie Kientz from the University of Washington. Accepted to UbiComp2010.
StreetSound (Summer 2008, University of California, Santa Cruz)
Created Google Maps application for the visually impaired using sound to convey street information. [ppt] [technical report]
FoodFit (Summer 2007, Illinois Institute of Technology)
Redesigned energy balance web application to improve usability and presentation of USDA food and activity research as part of an educational simulation package. Preliminary work was presented at the 2007 Biomedical Engineering Society Undergraduate Poster Session and a later iteration was presented at the 2008 Diabetes Technology Meeting and published as an abstract (p. 56) in the November 2008 Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology.
